A young boy takes home leftovers after a Pure Freedom event. In a nation where 80% are unemployed, it is a rare treat to have a full belly. At some of the Pure Freedom Zambia events, facilitators have had the funds to provide a meal. The “window of opportunity” is identified as the ages of 5-12. Children who are born with HIV usually die by the age of five, and children who do not have it tend to be sexually active by age twelve. Therefore, it is vital to offer an age appropriate message to elementary aged children as well as their teenaged brothers and sisters.

Mission-Z
Pure Freedom Zambia

One little girl came trembling to me, reported a Pure Freedom Zambia facilitator. She lifted the sleeves on her shirt and showed me her scarred forearms and hands.

“My father has been doing what you were talking about,” said the girl, referring to my reference to the witch-doctor driven practice of having sex with young virgins to be healed of HIV/AIDS. “After he is finished, he melts plastic and pours it on me. He said that if I ever tell anyone he will do something worse.”

But she did tell. And she did get help.

The mission of Pure Freedom Zambia is to equip Zambians with training, curriculum and finances to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in a country where 16-22% of the population suffers from the virus. A pivotal part of that mission is to help students and adults “take off the masks” that hide their need as it relates to sexual sin and the disease. Though painful, moments with little girls like this one are proof that the ministry is working.

To date, approximately 15,000 government school students have been exposed to the Pure Freedom Zambia curriculum which includes the love of God and the truth of Jesus Christ.

What’s New in 2006?

In 2006, Pure Freedom is taking twenty-two high school students and eight adults to Zambia. Under the name “Mission Z”, this team will make their own personal dent in the HIV/AIDS pandemic sweeping Africa, by building a piggery and fishery which will in turn fund the AIDS prevention education program described above. The curriculum, operated by a Zambian health agency, was written for the nation by Dannah Gresh. Over 100,000 government school students will eventually receive this curriculum which promotes healthy emotional, physical and spiritual choices.

In addition to building the piggery/fishery, the students will visit some of the government schools and will share testimonies of purity and secondary virginity.

“This is a really important part of what we’ll do,” says Dannah Gresh. “The Zambian teens watch American television, and they come to believe that every American teenager is sexually active. They revere us so much that they need teens who are not sexually active to visit them and encourage them and tell them that they can wait.”
